Making of the DIY track saw
Finding myself in need of some straight cut wood in hurry, I was using some straight board to align my saw. I quickly found that the board takes time to set up and still takes some careful cutting to avoid a wandering saw at awkward angles. I needed a track saw. I checked the prices and I was amazed at how expensive a track saw guide and saw was, so a DIY track saw was the only option.
I decided to make a quick one that would use my existing circular saw and materials I already had. The beauty of home built tools is that I can always see ways to improve on my design and plan for the ultimate version of said tool. I just needed something fast for now.
- Using an offcut piece of wood from a sheet which had a straight edge I positioned it to give me a piece of wood the entire length of the sheet and approximately 150mm (6 inches) wide.
- measuring a 18mm gap (the thickness of the plywood) for routering a track and a depth of 9mm or approximately half the thickness.
- After the track was made it was time to make the part that would fit to the circular saw. For this I cut a 8mm strip of ply and mounted it under the saw with 3 screws.
- The board was slightly oversize to ensure the blade was right next to the track jig.so a first cut is necessary. The reason I done it this way was for measuring cuts I can mark an additional 3mm(blade width) onto anything I cut and line up the jig with that mark.
- Lastly I routed an extra strip down the left side to give clearance to the clamps I’m using under the circular saw motor.
The DIY track saw works great. It has been made from the simplest parts and equipment. I will take note of what I would like in a “ultimate” DIY track saw and build one in the future.
Tools Used
- Circular Saw
- jigsaw
- Router
